Frequently Asked Questions About Headshots

Here are answers to the questions Nina hears most often before and after sessions. If something isn't covered here, reach out through the contact page and Nina will get back to you directly.

What should I wear for my headshot session?

Start with colors that complement your complexion and avoid bold patterns or anything with excessive shine. Solid colors in navy, jewel tones, charcoal or muted neutrals photograph well on most skin tones. Stick to simple, well-fitting pieces you'd wear to a professional meeting. The studio has both a steamer and a dressing area for your convenience. If you'd like feedback on your outfit choices before the session, feel free to send photos and Nina will weigh in.

Should I wear jewelry in my headshot?

Keep it simple. Stud earrings photograph better than hanging earrings, which draw the eye away from your face. A necklace is optional, when in doubt, skip it. The goal is for your face and expression to be the focus.

Should I get my makeup done for my headshot?

Professional hair and makeup services are available through Nina's preferred artists, who understand what reads well on camera for a professional headshot. If you're comfortable doing your own makeup, that works too just make sure your base matches your natural skin tone at the neck. Bring your makeup along for touch-ups during the session.

Do you photograph at offices or business locations?

In-studio sessions are the standard. On-location sessions are available for corporate teams of 10 or more. If you'd like to be photographed outside the studio for individual sessions, an additional fee applies. Reach out to discuss the specifics.

Are outdoor headshots an option?

Briefly stepping outside for a few shots is possible, but the majority of every session takes place in the studio. Outdoor headshots present consistent challenges — variable lighting, wind and distracting backgrounds — that are difficult to control. Sessions are not rescheduled due to weather.

Do you work with company style guides or specific photo requirements?

Yes. If your employer has a style guide or specific requirements for your headshot, bring those details to the session. If you've seen a look you like — on a website, in a magazine or on a Pinterest board — that's a useful starting point too. Send any references along when you book.

Is retouching included?

Yes. Every delivered image includes professional retouching. The standard process addresses flyaway hairs, skin texture, teeth and any temporary blemishes while keeping you looking natural. Extended retouching is available on request and is included in the image purchase price.

What if I want input from someone else before choosing my images?

That's completely fine. If you'd like time to consult with a partner or colleague before finalizing your selections, the image buyout option allows you to purchase all images at a flat fee and make selections at your own pace.

What is the rescheduling policy?

Rescheduling within 72 hours of your session date requires a $150 rescheduling fee. Rescheduled sessions must take place within 30 days of the original session date.

Is there an option to purchase all of my images?

Yes. An image buyout option is available at a flat fee for clients who want access to every image from their session. Purchasing images individually is also an option — your gallery will include a range of looks, expressions and wardrobe variations to choose from.

Where is the studio located?

The studio is at 4725 1st Street in downtown Pleasanton. Parking is available in three lots surrounding the building. The facility is ADA compliant with elevator access.

How long does a headshot session take?

Most individual sessions run 60 minutes with time for wardrobe changes. Corporate team sessions are scheduled at approximately 15 to 20 minutes per person.

When will I receive my photos?

Your fully retouched images are delivered through a private online gallery. Rush 24-hour delivery is available upon request.
