Traveling with Family

I just finished reading an intriguing article in my favorite travel magazine Afar. They sent a writer with only 24 hours notice to Belize with no reservations, no spouse and no children. If this were you, would it put you on anxiety alert or would you pack your bags and run out the door screaming "YES"?

At first, I thought how can I get an assignment like this?!  My husband would panic with the household/childcare logistics, like most significant others would - packing school lunch, food shopping, after school activities. You can see it played out in your mind, I'm sure.

We try and control every aspect of our life, but that's really an illusion. All it takes is one unexpected occurrence and the entire day changes.

As my busy season has geared up, I'm planning on letting the unexpected just happen. Sound very zen? Well it is! By December, I'm rushing around trying to squeeze every ounce of good weather before Winter arrives. Come Christmas, I crash.  Life is all about rushing around, getting from one place to another. Then you blink and you're looking a colleges for your kids.

Break the cycle and enjoy the here and now. When I first meet with a client, we talk about creating a session experience that really encompasses what they [their family] are all about. I want to create artwork of your family that you may not even know you wanted - until you see it. As a photographic artist, I will bring you my vision, my interpretations combined with your personality.

A custom portrait session is a joint venture. And no doubt you're saying, “how? my kids don't cooperate, my husband would rather be playing golf....” For starters, tell the family you are going to spend the morning or afternoon together. I want us to get to know one another. Allow me to create something that looks natural, unposed... unexpected.

If you promise yourself one thing as we get into the nicer weather, take time. Slow down. Let life unfold one day without a plan. And let's venture into the unexpected together!

Press Release for “My First Best Friend” Art Exhibit . Wilton Photographer

“My First Best Friend” Photography Exhibit Celebrates Bond between a Grandparent and Grandchild

Wilton, CT – April 7, 2014 –Photographer Nina Pomeroy will exhibit selected photos of grandparent/grandchildren pairs in My First Best Friend, a project designed to capture this special relationship. Approximately 13 pieces will be displayed at a wine and cheese reception at fine furnishings shop Olley Court in Ridgefield, CT.

The exhibit will open on Thursday, April 24th from 6-9pm at Olley Court, located at 418 Main Street, Ridgefield. This event is free and open to the public. The exhibit will hang at the shop through May 1st.

Pomeroy said, “My First Best Friend is a project that is very meaningful to me. I was sitting in my office in January, trying to think of a project that would recharge my batteries for the year and also give back to others. Out of the corner of my eye I noticed something falling off the shelf above my desk. It was an old photograph of my grandmother and her mother and I caught it before it fell.” She continued, “It struck me that even though I had lived in a two-family house with my grandmother throughout my childhood, there were really no nice photographs of her and me together.”

Inspiration struck, and Pomeroy set out to do a photographic study of grandparent and grandchild, singularly and together, focusing on the faces of the subjects and the connections they have to each other. She put out a casting call for subjects from the local area and had such an enthusiastic response that she had a waiting list. 13 families were photographed, including grandparents that traveled from all over the region just to participate in this photo session.

My goal of this project was to capture that special relationship between grandchild and grandparent -- a bit of who they are in this point in time as well as the relationship between them. Too often we wait until that ‘perfect moment,’ and many times that moment never comes. Everyone deserves to have a beautiful, tangible photo that illustrates their relationships,” Pomeroy said.

After the show, families will have the opportunity to view all the photos Pomeroy took during their session and purchase prints.

Susan Buzaid and Robin Curnan, owners of Olley Court, said, “We are committed to supporting local artists like Nina as well as local businesses and philanthropies. Her exhibit fits beautifully into our shop, where we showcase quality pieces that are uniquely meaningful to home owners as opposed to having lots of items that are mass produced.”

On May 29th, Ura the Spa in Wilton will exhibit My First Best Friend. Further details on that event are forthcoming. Pomeroy will show between 12-18 pieces on easels throughout the space.
